Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a gentle, non-invasive long-term solution to unwanted hair for women and men.

By removing hair from virtually any part of your body, this treatment will leave your skin feeling soft and smooth and free from painful in-growing hairs, shave rash and shadows.

We use a combination of Nd:Yag pulse laser and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) systems. Both of these are clinically proven to treat unwanted hair safely in all skin types from Asian skin to fair hair and fair skin.

We are able to offer you tailor-made treatment depending on your skin and hair colour, giving you permanent, rewarding results that can boost self-esteem and confidence.

How it works

You cannot have a suntan (real or false) when you have hair removal treatments. This is because the melanin levels will be raised in the skin and the light energy will be attracted to it. This means less energy is going to your hair, so the treatment won’t be effective. As well as the heat being held in your skin causing irritation and potential damage.

Laser hair removal works by destroying the base of the hair follicle which is the source of new hair growth. A short burst of light energy is delivered onto the skin surface by the laser or IPL. This light energy is absorbed by the melanin (colour pigment) in the hair and converts this energy into heat. When the hair is in growth stage, the heat will travel down the hair follicle to the root and destroy the germination centre preventing regrowth. Treated hairs fall out of the follicle and another hair shouldn’t grow.

Hair grows in cycles and not all hair follicles are in the growth stage at the same time. It is essential that the hair shaft is present in the hair follicle for the treatment to be successful, which means a course of treatments are required to ensure that all hairs are treated effectively.

The hair needs to be cut or shaved for treatment, there is no need to grow it for treatment and you can trim as much as you want between sessions. Please do not wax, pluck or thread as this will remove the hair from the follicle that is being targeted.

Prices

An initial consultation is required and should take around 45 minutes. This is charged at £20 but is credited against your first treatment. During this consultation, the area of hair removal will be evaluated, and the medical risks, benefits and process of laser/IPL hair removal will be thoroughly explained to you. The treatment price will be confirmed as well as the approximate number of treatments.

We do a small test patch during the consultation, and we can book your first session 7 days later. We cannot treat you without first doing a test patch.

Questions & Answers

Does It Hurt?

The laser/IPL fires short pulses of light which can feel warm against the skin surface. We use a powerful cooler to lower the skin surface temperature ensuring that most of our clients experience no more than mild discomfort. After initial consultation we will do a hair removal test patch, this is to check that the laser and your body will react in a positive way to the treatment – this will need to be carried out at least one week before the treatment starts. As long as there’s no adverse reaction after the test patch, then the hair removal treatment can continue.

Can All Hair Colours Be Treated?

Lasers and IPLs work best on dark hairs on fair skin as the darker pigmentation in the hair absorbs the light more effectively.

Here at Vale Laser Clinic, we offer Nd:Yag laser treatment which is effective for darker hair on darker skin type 4. We also offer the 660nm IPL which works well on skin types 1 to 3 as well as the 650nm Advanced which works on finer lighter hair on lighter skin type 1 and 2. Unfortunately, white and grey hair have little or no melanin and do not respond to laser or IPL treatment but we can treat with Electrolysis

What Are The Side Effects and The Healing Process?

Laser hair removal is very safe as long as its performed by trained professionals on suitable machines. After the first session the treated area may feel hot and your hair follicles may be red or swollen. Do not use any perfumed products on the skin for 48 hours after treatment and when cleansing use a gentle wash suitable to your skin. Protect your skin from the sun for the first two weeks after treatment, then use sunblock for the following 6 weeks. You can also apply a cold compresses or Aloe Vera gel which will help to sooth the area. Avoid excessive exercise for 24-48 hours.

You cannot have a suntan (real or false) when you have hair removal treatments. This is because the melanin levels will be raised in the skin and the light energy will be attracted to it. This means less energy is going to your hair so the treatment won’t be effective. As well as heat being held in your skin causing irritation and potential damage.
