Guide to Laser Tattoo Removal Aftercare

Remember when you first got your tattoo and were told to look after the area in a certain way? Well, getting laser tattoo removal affects the skin in a similar way – so you need to adhere to a proper aftercare routine after each session.

This will ensure your skin heals properly – and can actually speed up the removal process.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser tattoo removal works by pulsing light energy into your skin which is then absorbed by the tattoo ink. As the ink particles heat up, they shatter and disperse – leaving your tattoo looking a little paler after each treatment.

Because it focuses on light therapy, laser tattoo removal can make your skin very sensitive to sunlight. Remember to wear an SPF treatment – preferably 30+ – any time you’re outdoors and the area is exposed. Limit sun exposure as much as possible for about a month both before and after treatment and we’re unable to treat sun exposed skin.

Skincare immediately post-treatment

So you’ve had your first laser tattoo removal session and your skin is feeling a little sore. Top tip? Keep it covered with a sterilized gauze bandage. Your therapist may put the first one of these on, alongside some aloe vera gel to ensure the area stays infection-free.

For around three days, keep the area bandaged – even if it means reapplying some ointment and gauze yourself.

After that, you can remove the bandage if you’d prefer – but try to keep the area clean and dry and avoid it rubbing against any tight clothing.

Occlusive moisturisers – ones that form a barrier layer over your skin – like Vaseline and Aquaphor can help to soothe the area at this stage. However, we’d recommend using aloe vera to soothe and hydrate the skin.

Vitamin E ointment can also be useful, as it can encourage cell rejuvenation and speed skin healing.

You might experience some scabbing or blistering, which can be irritating. However, don’t pick at the skin – we’re trying to maintain healthy skin, and picking at scabs and blisters just opens the skin up to bacterial entry.

Can you shower after laser tattoo removal?

Showering isn’t advised for the first few days after laser tattoo removal. Once you’ve removed your bandage after three days, you can shower.

Even then, try not to use high-pressure water or water that’s too hot, as your skin is likely to still be sensitive.

Do try to avoid soaking the skin in any way – including baths, hot tubs, and pools – for around two weeks, or until the area is fully healed.

Holistic aftercare

Now you know how to look after your skin using topical measures, and what not to do. But there are plenty of ways in which we can support our immune systems and aid the recovery process to maintain healthy skin.

Staying hydrated is a great way to help your body to heal – water helps to carry oxygen to your body’s cells through your bloodstream. It also helps to flush toxins out of your body, so could help you avoid an infection.

Taking probiotics or a multivitamin can give your immune system a boost, letting your laser site heal more quickly and with fewer chances of infection.

Exercising – once the area is healed – can boost your blood flow and speed up the tattoo removal process.

Of course, there are things we do that can cause our immune systems to falter as well.

Avoid things that cause dehydration – including alcohol and caffeine. Alcohol is particularly detrimental to your immune system and can prevent it from functioning at its best.

Smoking is another activity that’s best avoided if possible. Because smoking is known to inhibit wound healing, it can actually elongate the laser tattoo removal process – meaning you might have to have a few more sessions.

Payment Plans and Course Prices

Over the last few months, I have been asked by many clients about course discounts and payment plans. I am pleased to say I have researched the best options and we have created a treatment price list, which incorporates course discounts. Also, we now offer GoCardless as a way of saving towards courses or breaking down the cost of treatments.

Here’s some more information about the options available.

I have updated our prices across the website, this gives our clients options when booking treatments. We have a pricing structure for one off treatments, or a discount when booking a course of treatments. When booking a course, you will need to pay at least 50% upfront, with the remaining spread over one or two payments through GoCardless. This is dependent on the number of treatments and value of the course.

New Year Habits

New year is a great time to create new habits, we usually start keenly and overhaul our regime but if it’s too difficult or requires lots of energy or big changes, chances are by February you are back to you old habits.  Lots of clients come to me and say they don’t have time to cleanse and tone or the forget to take supplements. I hold my hands up, this used to be me but with 3 children under 8, a busy house and my own business I have found ways to incorporate it into my routine and it just all becomes ingrained in my day.

Here’s my top 5 tips to help you create that new routine:

1.  skin-cleansingTaking your makeup off doesn’t have to wait until bed time.  Quite often I remove my make up and cleanse with lotion and a face cloth when I’m home with the kids after school or their activities.  I’ll do it while they are in the shower or brushing their teeth or I’m getting changed out of my work clothes. My skin feels clearer and lighter and it means that when the time comes I can just fall in between the sheets.

2.  No time to tone.  The image of a lady set in front of her vanity mirror using cotton pads to cleanse and tone whilst preparing for the day is just not happening in our house while we rush to get to where we need to be.  My best advice for you is to incorporate it into something you do already.  I shower and cleanse at the same time.  Stage 1 complete.  I’m dry and putting on my underwear then pat my toner on my face (no cotton wool required) stage 2 complete.  Bra next and then moisturise with serums cocktailed in are applied, stage 3 complete.  Deodorant, clothes and my hair is brushed then my RAD is patted in EVERY DAY for protection against SPF’s, stage 4 complete.  My bottles are lined up in my bedroom, with easy access and it’s taken no more than 30 seconds to incorporate it into getting dressed which I have to do every day. suplements

3.  Forgetting to take skin care supplements.  A common problem.  Do you often for get to brush your teeth?  Pop your supplements next to your tooth brush, this gives you two opportunities a day to take them and a water supply on tap (see what I did there?).

4.  Information overload. With marketing reaching us 24/7 it’s hard to know what’s right for your skin and it can be expensive to use something that will not have the desired effect. Its easy to stick with what you’ve always done. But.. You can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results.  See a skin care specialist, have your skin analysed to see what happening below the surface and start with the basics. Get a good routine of cleanse, tone, moisturise and protect. incorporate this into your daily routine like in point 1 using products that are full of vitamin A and anti-oxidants, these are the ingredients scientifically proven to improve your skin’s health and appearance. And when you have embedded these good habits into your routine, adding a roller of an evening or the odd home skin peel is no problem.

5.  Keep it clean.  Not just your skin but the tools you use every day. Wash your makeup brushes, take them with you to your facial specialist who will use specific brush shampoo to clean them for you and don’t forget your makeup bag, put it through the washing machine or clean with a suitable cleaner regularly.  If you use a cloth to clean your face treat it like your knickers, a clean one every day!
