You may have heard of the term High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) facial and wondered just what was involved.

In this article, we will look at not only what an HIFU facial is but also if it has any side effects and just how it may be able to benefit you. We’ll also point to a study to show just why skin care experts are raving about it.

In a nutshell, a HIFU facial is a safe treatment which is non-invasive and uses ultrasound to heat up the skin at a more than superficial level. In other words, it penetrates deep layers of the skin. This has the effect of repairing damaged skin cells by encouraging the body to produce more collagen right at the source.

The ultrasound involves waves of energy which are used to target specific areas, such as drooping eyelids, slack skin on the neck or wrinkles on the face etc. In other words, it has a skin tightening effect.

Despite the facial being termed ‘intense,’ it’s actually a very simple procedure which involves no preparation and – unlike a surgical facelift – requires no downtime afterwards either. In other words, it can be performed in the middle of the day during a break from work (hence its reputation as ‘the lunchtime facelift’).

What’s involved in a HIFU facial?

When you receive your HIFU you will be asked to lie down and your face will be cleansed. It’s then a case of applying a gel to the area in question. Ultrasound waves will then be applied, using our Focus Dual platform and in short bursts. Depending on what you are receiving treatment for, this can last anything from 30 up to 90 minutes.

Does a HIFU facial hurt?

Afterwards you may feel a little sensitive but this is usually very minimal.

Side effects are also minimal and can include redness or minimal swelling in the targeted area. Some light bruising may occure but this is very rare.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of HIFU facials you have will depend on what you want to improve but the best results usually appear in two to three months after the initial treatment. The positive effects can last for up to one year.
